The assa-peixe (Vernonia polysphaera) is a common plant in the Brazilian Savanna. Honey harvested from assa-peixe blossoms is clear and translucent, mild and delicious in flavor as orange blossom honey. Tea prepared with assa-peixe leaves and roots has been used in folk medicine as an expectorant, and is contained in the formula of most cough syrups. The assa-peixe plant is diuretic and is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Assa-peixe honey is also considered a remedy for diseases of the respiratory and urinary tracts. Daily intake can be a great ally of patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and asthma. In the case of colds and flu, a spoon taken before sleep, soothes coughs and promotes restful sleep.
