Propolis: A Gift from Nature to Man's health

Propolis is a product formed from resinous substances collected by bees in tree bark, buds, or other parts of plant tissue. These resins are carried to the hive where saliva and wax is added, distributing the chemical composition of Propolis in the following proportion: 55% plant resins, 30% wax, 8-10% essential oils; 5% pollen. This resin is applied around the hive to keep intruders out. Based on this fact it is believed that a hive is as sterile as a surgery room in the best hospitals.

While bees use Propolis as a true chemical weapon, for humans it is a natural antibiotic that is non-toxic and has no side effects! Propolis has been the subject of intense scientific research over the past 30 years. But researchers have only recently become interested in the chemical variations of Propolis collected in different geographic regions, and discovered that the anti-inflammatory (inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria), antifungal (inhibiting the growth of fungi), antiviral (inhibiting the multiplication of viruses) , antioxidant (combating free radicals responsible for human aging), and immunomodulatory (protecting our immune system) properties are relatively constant in samples from different regions of the planet. However, Brazilian Propolis has attracted the attention of scientists worldwide for showing substances with higher hepatoprotective (protecting the liver) activity and anti-HIV (combating AIDS) components.

Yet Propolis is constantly surprising scientists. Further to displaying a huge list of therapeutic properties, laboratory tests in Europe have proved that Propolis is able to act synergistically with antibiotics and antifungals. This suggests that Propolis is able to potentialize the effects of these drugs. The World Health Organization - WHO has included Propolis as part of its Nutrition and Health program.
